Members of the Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club will celebrate our independence from the city where independence was declared, Philadelphia, PA. Club members will be operating a special event station using the Club call WM3PEN. Amateur radio stations operating from the original 13 colonies will also be on the air.
The theme for 2012 is Colonial Era US Navy Tall Ships". WM3PEN will offer a special QSL card. The 13 Colony Special Event will be offering a special certificate with the USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides” on it.
WM3PEN will participate in the event. When you work WM3PEN make a note on the 13 colony log sheet and you will get a "Liberty Bell" endorsement with the WM3PEN call place on the certificate.
WM3PEN will be offering a great custom QSL Card honoring Philadelphia resident Commodore John Barry, the first flag officer of the United States Navy.
Barry has been described as the `Father of the American Navy' by his contemporaries for his unfailing service to the United States Navy. In 1797 Barry received Commission Number One in the Navy from President Washington, placing him in charge of the new Navy and oversight of the construction and outfitting of its first frigates. The U.S.S. United States and the U.S.S. Constitution were both built under his command.
In 1802 the U.S. Navy issued the Barron Signal Book, the work of Commodore John Barry, U.S. Navy, and Captain James Barron, U.S. Navy. This communications book was similar to the Truxton Signal Book except that it was better organized. Commodore Barry is buried in Philadelphia.
When you work WM3PEN send an SASE, IRC, or Green Stamp ($1) with your QSL to WM3PEN. Use the address for WM3PEN at QRZ.COM. You can also QSL via the bureau. SWLs may send a confirmation of reception to request a QSL card. Simply indicate the stations making contact with WM3PEN, time, frequency, and your receiving equipment. SWL stations should follow the same mailing instructions. Recognizing that the 4th comes in the middle of the week (Wednesday) and that
some operators will be going to their work on the 2nd, 3rd and 5th, we will add a BONUS DAY on Saturday, June 30, 2012! Keep in mind that there may be fewer operators available on the work days so, PLEASE BE PATIENT!
For further information on the WM3PEN operation contact WM3PEN@ARRL.NET.
Any donations to help with printing costs are always appreciated, and can be sent along with your QSL request.
Times will be: 9:00 AM Eastern Daylight on June 30th to 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight on July 5th.
